The artist who created the “Mona Lisa” of Bali was born into Javanese nobility, became an Indonesian revolutionary before winning a scholarship to study art in Rome. On his return he settled in Bali where he rapidly became famous not only for his art but also his music. In 1989 he married the author, an English woman, now an Indonesian citizen, with whom he shared is last years.
